This last week the familiar “jobs, jobs, jobs” mantra echoed throughout country but it wasn’t just about Obama’s stimulus proposal this time (although POTUS was loud and clear about it all week). It was also about a transformative visionary who himself went through several transformations. His passing on Wednesday night brought together people from near and far to express their wonder and appreciation for this iconic character who created a brave new world from his very own knowledge garage. His garage was, at first, a real place and eventually morphed into a vast virtual world for all of us to innovate and participate in. His impact on education was profound way back in the 80′s when educators began to explore how instruction could be enhanced through computer-based technologies. And now we can only begin to imagine the power of his legacy through i-isms moving forward. Indeed the best of Steve Jobs is yet come. Let’s hear it for “jobs, jobs, jobs”! RIP, Steve.

Innovation abuzz— Lots of great innovation work among Knowledge Alliance members these days. Check the launch of McREL’s Network for Innovation this coming week at a big summit gathering at Lockheed-Martin headquarters in Florida. And be sure to bookmark Bob Slavin’s new blog “Sputnik: Advancing Education through Innovation and Evidence” which will include a whole bunch of great guest bloggers including this week Education Northwest’s Steve Fleischman. And then take a look at the just-launched Digital Promise initiative in which a number of Alliance members helped create. Take special note that evidence and R&D are now becoming a part of the innovation discussion in education. Not so just a few years ago when innovators and researchers tended to live in separate worlds. Great stuff all around coming out of those knowledge garages!
